Blackmore's Night - A Knight in York

Ritchie Blackmore’s musical career has been branded by an uncompromising faithfulness to his own musical ideals: he has already distinguished himself as an ambitioned rock musician in Deep Purple and Rainbow. For the past 15 years, Blackmore‘s Night has shown a marked contrast to his two previously successful bands, making him one of the few musicians who has successfully formed and performed in three different musical genres. With “A Knight In York“, the third Blackmore’s Night DVD release, Ritchie, Candice Night and their band of minstrels take their devoted audience on a musical journey through the ages.

Opening with the lively Locked Within a Crystal Ball and feature’s a solo by Candice Night on a renaissance woodwind instrument. Gilded Cage is slower track before we move onto my two favorite tracks The Circle and Journeyman which both feature Ritchie Blackmore with his famous fender guitar. These songs have a hint of Ritchie’s early Rainbow days and the solos clearly contain his signature sound.

During World of Stone Ritchie and Candice’s young daughter, Autumn makes an appearance. She even turns down the opportunity to strum her dad’s guitar. The Peasant’s Promise is catchy tune featuring Ritchie on Mandola. Throughout Candice’s voice is captivating and she animates the story in the songs through facial expressions and hand gestures. Toast to Tomorrow is a song with a Russian feel to it and it has the slightly bizarre feature of band members pretending to be Lady Gaga in the middle of it. Fires at Midnight provides a song of nearly 10 minutes that gives Ritchie a chance play some lovely accustic guitar. The main set is brought to a close with Darkness and Dance of Darkness which is an instrumental take on the previous song. The encore opens with Dandelion Wine and easy going folk song before moving into the livelier All the Fun of the Fair. The set is brought to a close with a simple Ballad called First of May featuring Ritchie and Candice.

The extras on the DVD consist of some nice shots of medieval York.
