Black Star Riders and Europe Leeds Academy 8 March 2015

The double headliner status of the show tonight meant that both group had shorter set times than you would expect to see on their own headlining tour.

This seemed to really suit Black Star Riders as they raced through their pacey set which had 10 songs from their own CDs and 6 Thin Lizzy covers cleverly placed in the set.

Ricky Warwick is a great front man for the twin guitar attack of Damon Johnson and Scott Gorham. Opening up with Bound for Glory the band were well received, second but the cheers were taken up another notch when the rift for Jailbreak started. The pace of the set was driven on throughout by the back line of Robbie Crane and Jimmy Degrasso. The set was brought to fantastic climax with Rosalie, The Killer Instinct and Whiskey in the Jar. A great set and hope it’s not too long until I can see them again.

The full set list was

Bound for Glory
Jailbreak
Kingdom of the Lost
Charlie I Gotta Go
Hoodoo Voodoo
Soldierstown
Are You Ready
The Boys are back in Town
Through the Motions
All Hell Breaks Loose
Emerald
Finest Hour
Rosalie
The Killer Instinct
Whiskey in the Jar

Europe opened up two songs from their new CD War of Kings and Hole in my Pocket. The title track that had be promoted on the radio and the internet, so was familiar but Hole in my Pocket and fell a bit flat as the new CD was not released until two days after the show. Last Look at Eden ignited the show again followed by Girl from Lebanon and the wonderful Superstitious.  Throughout the show just never quite hit top gear for me and the unfamiliar songs from the new album broke the momentum.

The biggest cheer of the night was of course left for the very familiar Final Count Down which everyone sung along with, but Black Star Riders took the honours for me tonight.
