Wishbone Ash - Holmfirth - 24 Oct

As Kirsty and Phil would say it’s all about location, location, location or in this case venue, venue, venue. - Holmfirth Picturedrome is now West Yorkshires premier venue and yes, there was Bitter on sale.

We were here to see Wishbone Ash (the Andy Powell version), my first time of seeing this version of the band and I was not disappointed.

I’m a recent convert to Wishbone Ash, thanks to Tony. The sound is very much based on the twin lead guitar attack. In very simple terms if you imagine a solo similar in style to the one from Emerald in nearly every song and you’re not that far off where most songs end up.

On stage for just short of two hours the set contained the “hits” The King Will Come, Throw Down the Sword, Hard Times etc plus a couple of new ones. The set also included a drum solo that the whole band took part in. Drummer drumming, Bass player on cow bells second guitarist on a shaky thing (like you played in school) and Andy Powell balancing a glass of beer on his head. Now that’s entertainment.

Support was from Stone Sole River, only caught the end of them. I have seen them before supporting Bernie Torme. The guitarist is great.

Great sound, great band, great venue and beer, (if it had been Real Ale I would have been in heaven).
Possibly the best gig this year it has to be 10/10.

Next up it’s the Tygers of Pan Tang 3rd Nov.
