Saxon/The Quireboys – Leeds 02 Academy 24 April 2013
Tonight’s openers,
Redline, were a total unknown to me, but they put together a great set in
support of their current CD called Vices. The set closer King of the Mountains
was a real classic.
The Quireboys I was
much more familiar with and tonight we got a short set of hits with a couple of
songs from the new CD, which is due out in the summer. The new songs stood up
on their own merit and I look forward to headline shows in August. A quick word
of praise for Spike who bravely battled on despite suffering from a broken
foot.
Opening up with Sacrifice
Saxon returned to Leeds like conquering heroes. We had a total of six
songs from the brilliant new Sacrifice CD, Made in Belfast, Wheels of Terror, Night
of the Wolf, Stand up and Shout and the fantastic Guardians of the Tomb these
were interspersed classics like, Power and the Glory, Rock ‘n’ Roll Gypsy, Bands
Played On and Ride Like the Wind which went down surprisingly well, time to
find my copy of Destiny again I think.
Following Conquistador which featured
the Nigel Glockler drum solo the band played the acoustic Iron Wheels from the
sadly over looked Forever Free CD.
As we hit the final
third of the two hour set the big guns of classic hits are rolled out, Wheels
of Steel, 747, Motorcycle Man, Strong Arm of the Law, Dallas 1pm, Denim & Leather
and a great evening was brought to a close with Princess of the Night.
Three great bands for £18.50p,
a great value package.
Let’s hope Oxford is as good!!
