Chantel McGregor - Halifax Playhouse - 9 October 2015

Chantel McGregor’s new CD Lose Control presents Chantel with harder rock sound than previously and I was intrigued to see if this change was evident in the live setting as well. It didn’t take long to find out, opening song Caught Out rocked out of the blocks before we were treated to the first of many new songs in the shape Burn Your Anger.

Tonight’s set was being driven (rocked?) along by drummer Keith McPartling and new bassist Colin Sutton. Throughout the night they provided the perfect foundation for Chantel McGregor to build layers of guitar and vocals on and create great rock songs.

New numbers Southern Belle and Lose Control received great receptions before the extended instrumental conclusion of Day Dream. The rockiest version of Fabulous that I had ever heard brought the first part of the show to an end.

The tone of the evening changed as Chantel showed a different side to her musical talent by playing two beautiful acoustic numbers Anaesthetise and Home, one of my favourite tracks on the Lose Control CD.

After this chance for everyone to catch their breath Keith and Colin returned and the rock was back on the menu for the second half of the set, which included three new songs Killing Time, Your Fever, Walk on Land and I’m No Good For You from the Like No Other CD.

The sell-out crowd roared for more and were delighted the when the band returned to play Take the Power as the encore, this track is the current single and is receiving air play on Plant Rock.

During the evening the band had to overcome some issues caused by minor technical problems and in a couple of the songs I would have preferred Chantel’s vocals slightly higher in the mix, but these were only small issues that did not detract too much to a great performance.

I would recommend that you can catch Chantel McGregor at the following UK show during 2015.
