The Defiants cd review

The Defiants release their debut album on Frontiers Records Srl on the 15th of April and any fan of melodic rock will want a copy.

Re uniting ex Danger Danger colleagues vocalist Paul Laine,Bruno Ravel on bass and production and Rob Marcello on guitars with Van Romaine on drums any fan of Danger Danger will think all of their Christmases have come at once.

Rammed full of quality melodic rock with vocal melodies to die for and choruses that soar and guitar melodies and solos that make the hair on the back of your neck stand to attention and all wrapped up in a production that sounds a million dollars.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's their video's would be all over MTV with stadium sell outs guaranteed. In fact if Bon Jovi released this album now you would think it is the best thing they have done in decades.

Every song stands out on it's own which is the sign of a top notch release with every song a potential single back in the day.All have huge choruses that instantly attach to your brain and won't let go until you play it again.

I normally go track by track but with such quality it is easier to say the songs fall into categories.

Rockers include The Last Kiss,We All Fall Down and opener Love And Bullets all possess big guitar riffs and vocal hooks that could land a Great White with Paul Laine sounding fantastic and Rob Marcello adding guitar melody textures as well as short fiery solo's that fit perfectly.

They can also wrap things in an AOR sheen with When The Lights Go Down,Runaway,Waiting On A Heartbreak and Take Me Back with a slight decrease in pace but no lack of choruses or melodies both musically or vocally.

Save Me Tonight and that's When I'll Stop Loving You are the two ballads and both are top draw with Laine's vocal just stunning and Marcello's lengthy solo mid song and on the outro on the latter along with his extra guitar melodies just superb and being the icing on a supreme cake.

L'il Miss Rock n'Roll is a huge summer song with a swinging guitar melody line and stop/start guitar riff and the whole song has a real groove to it and a real party feel to the chorus with Laine wanting to get naughty naughty with his L'il Miss Rock n'Roll.

Underneath The Stars closes the album with a track that encapsulates everything on the album with a big guitar riff start and through the verse but as we get to the pre chorus it dips to allow a massive aor style chorus with Laine holding onto notes throughout.
Marcello adds some soloing at the end of the chorus too and a subtle keyboard passage on the second verse under the main guitar riff that has returned gives it a slightly different feel.
Some big background vocals on the main chorus part too just a perfect way to finish the cd and as the outro starts a big drum track kicks in and Marcello solo's hard to top it all.

The guys in The Defiants reunited at the suggestion of Frontiers' President Serafino Perugino and the man deserves a medal for getting them back together as he has done on many of the projects that Frontiers have produced.

Lets us hope and pray that this is more than one studio album because with the class on this album the world needs to hear more.

With this album and Treat's Ghost Of Graceland April is a fantastic month for melodic music lovers with two releases destined to be amongst the best of 2016.
